I don't hate the 'Rosencrantz as dukes choice' theory, its just that their one scene together doesn't really allude to it. He says he 'made friends' amongst them and crimson guard while doing so. Rosencrantz got his knowledge when investigating Mullencamp as part of a Riskbreaker mission. Thus, the dispute arises not because the Duke thinks Rosencrantz is the best candidate, but because hes seeking ANY alternative to Joshua. The Duke's unwillingness to sacricifice his second son was his weakness, even if by his normal standards it would be the right thing to do. I believe both the Duke and Sydney to be utterly ruthless in their mission to protect the Dark. And more importantly, I think that even if it IS true, the emphasis should be placed on Joshua nonetheless. I saw Sydney proposing Joshua, and the Duke proposing Rosencrantz, and that causing the schism between the two.īut ultimately, there's a lack of evidence to support that. When I was originally writing this up, my first theory was an amalgamtion of your second point. This is actually my favourite explanation since otherwise Rosencrantz feels like a really extraneous character.Īnyway, whether or not there was already a named successor - Joshua, Jan, or otherwise - is pretty impossible to prove with canon since Matsuno left this one fuzzy and there's no dialogue in the game about it. I do like this theory as it explains just why Rosencrantz is present, why he has a relationship with the Duke and Sydney, and why the heck he knows so much about the Dark and succession. Others have said the big schism between the two Bardorbas was actually about Rosencrantz! That the Duke had chosen Rosencrantz as their successor (or was about to) and that Sydney had objected, kidnapping Joshua and running away with the Blood-Sin in order to prevent the transfer of power from taking place. Some have supposed Sydney was following a script he had foreseen (remember, he's a legit prophet) would bring forth a suitable successor, and that the entire attack on the Duke and kidnapping were solely to coax Ashley from the aether. I did like your interpretation that Joshua was the true prize, though I've seen other theories floated about. Yes, I adore the game's in media res introduction. We chat (and admittedly, argue) about all video game related things and I'd love to hear what you have to say, whether you agree or disagree! If you'd like a more informal chat, I'd love if you'd drop by our discord.

If you do listen to the cast, be aware that I know much more after all my research than I did at the time of the cast. But I adore its story, which is reminiscent in style of a couple of my favourite authors (Gene Wolfe and Steven Erikson).

I only played it for the first time for the podcast quite recently. This article spoils the entirety of the Vagrant Story plot, so read at your own peril!Īny criticisms or comments are greatly appreciated! I'm no Vagrant Story veteran. Its a very complex and confusing plot, so I sought to break it down into its essential elements. In this instance though, I put my efforts into simply understanding, and then explaining what exactly is going on in Vagrant Story. Normally, I present a criticism, or an exploration of an idea tangential to the game. In this article I did something a little different. Hey everyone, I played through Vagrant Story a month ago for my podcast, and I always like to do a follow up article on each game to further expand on my experiences.
